Our Legacy of Hope
The Story Behind Libby’s Legacy
When Libby Maynard was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, her family was faced with the unimaginable question so many families hear: “How much time do we have?”
Doctors estimated three to five years, but Libby passed away just six weeks after her diagnosis, before fulfilling her dream of taking a cruise to Alaska with her family.
In 2007, Libby’s daughter, Robin Maynard, founded Libby’s Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of her mother’s strength, faith, and compassion. What began as a mission to advocate for patients and provide one family each year with the Live Big Memory Cruise quickly evolved into something much greater.
By 2008, it became clear that many uninsured and underserved individuals lacked access to critical breast health services and support. In response, Libby’s Legacy expanded its mission to provide free mammograms, follow-up breast health services, patient advocacy, education, and community support throughout Central Florida.
As the need for services continued to grow, Robin left her full-time career as a Crime Scene Investigator in 2009 to dedicate herself fully to the foundation’s mission.
Since its inception, Libby’s Legacy has helped provide more than 7,000 breast health services and has supported more than 180 women and one man through diagnosis, treatment navigation, survivorship, and advocacy.
Today, Libby’s Legacy continues to serve as a source of hope, compassion, education, and empowerment — ensuring no one has to face breast cancer alone.
